The Benefits Of Water As A Remedy For Asthma

By: Susan Millar

Many people who suffer from asthma symptoms are not aware that drinking water is one of the best ways to get asthma relief. Human lungs have a higher need for water than other organs in the body. Without adequate hydration, the lungs become sensitive and restricted. Dehydration can cause the body to produce increased levels of histamine. The increased levels of histamine, in turn, can produce negative health symptoms like back pain, sore joints, asthma and allergic reactions.
An adequate amount of daily water intake has many health benefits. Drinking pure water can actually prevent or lessen asthma and allergy symptoms. Not only is water inexpensive, it is one of the simplest asthma and allergy relief remedies that can be obtained without any negative side effects.
Dehydrated lungs can cause shrinkage of the air passages. Constricted airways lesson the ability of the lungs to release water vapor. This, in turn, causes mucus buildup which can inhibit breathing. The wheezing and coughing symptoms of asthma increase as the mucus becomes sticky and thick within the air passages of the lungs. Drinking eight to ten glasses of pure water daily can go a long way in preventing further attacks. Spacing out the water intake to drinking a glass every two hours is effective. Forcing down more than the recommended daily amount of eight to ten glasses of water a day is not necessary. Moderation is always wise.
The extra fluid intake is well worth the extra trips to the restroom. The health benefits of a fully-hydrated body outweigh the increased urine output. Dark yellow urine is a signal that the body needs more water. Unless someone is taking a vitamin supplement like a B vitamin, healthy urine should always be the color of pale, yellow straw.
Daily water intake and types of water to drink are simply a matter of personal preference. Some people like to filter plain tap water using specialized filters like Brita, for instance. Some find that bottled spring water is more portable. Water can be kept clean and non-toxic by using containers made of glass, stainless steel and non-toxic plastic. Shaking the container vigorously for one minute before drinking can add extra oxygen to the water.
Sea salt has also been shown to provide effective asthma relief. Health practitioners suggest that adding a little sea salt to the daily water intake promotes easier breathing by breaking up mucus plugs in the lungs. The easiest way to incorporate some sea salt into the daily water intake is to add a quarter teaspoon of sea salt per quart of water. Sea salt can also be added by the pinch for every two glasses of water measuring eight ounces each.
